Oil on wood, 42x59cm

Some species of snails are hermaphrodites, meaning they have both male and female reproductive organs. These snails can produce both eggs and sperm, allowing them to mate with any other individual of their species, increasing their chances of finding a mate. Some snails can even self-fertilise under certain conditions. This snail has just found another snail it likes.

This painting is part of Monkey Business, an exhibition inspired by the diverse expressions of biological sex and sexual behaviour in the animal kingdom.
